Kindle Your Social Life --- We're Making Reading Cool Again

Hello:

I live in China. I ordered many books from Amazon as I have a United States credit card. I ordered a Kindle soon after Amazon made it available.

I download books to my Kindle through the USB cord. It is very easy to do this. By the way you must order the Kindle and have it delivered in the United States. I had mine delivered to my father in Oregon. He then mailed it to me.

I am moving back the United States in three weeks. I will turn on the Whispernet but first take out the SD card. Amazon will download all of stuff I ordered for my Kindle since last February when I got it.

I am surprised when I hear people living overseas not getting a Kindle because of no Whispernet. I get along fine without whisternet.

Hello, I also live in China, and am looking to purchase a Kindle. As I was researching this gadget, I realized the newer versions, Kindle 2 and Kindle DX, both do not have SD card slots. Does that mean it cannot be used overseas? Is it possible to still buy the old model? Thanks.

SD cards are only for storage. Both the Kindle 2 and newer Kindle DX have internal storage capacity that holds a lot of books.

To download books overseas you will need:

1) Your USB cord that comes with the Kindle.
2) A credit card on your Amazon account.

To download a book to your Kindle while living in China, find the book you want to buy, click on "buy it now." Go to Manage Your Kindle, where you will see your new purchase. It gives you two options: one, dowload by whispernet, and two, download to your computer. Click on download to your computer. Hook up your USB connection and you will see your Amazon Kindle storage there. Once you dowload it to your computer it should be on your Kindle right then as it downloads to your Kindle through your USB cord.

You can buy either the Kindle 1 or Kindle 2. The K2 has text to speech features and is slimmer than the K1. I still have the K1 and no intention to buy a K2 or the Kdx, a much bigger Kindle.

Go to Amazon.com to see what each is selling for. Check out eBay too for Kindles on sale there.

Hello Marar S.

You must have your Kindle hooked to your computer with the USB cord that came with it. Once you do that then order a book with the one click. It will show up on the Kindle window you have open on your Kindle.

Do you have a credit card on file with Amazon? Your credit card on file must have a U.S. address on it.

Of course, as you know, whispernet does not work where you live if you live overseas.

I am no longer in China. I do wonder if Amazon changed its policy about persons overseas buying books from the Kindle page. I know it worked like a charm the entire time I was in Shanghai once I got my Kindle delivered there.

I do not know if it works that way now. Seems like it should if you can buy the book in the first place. I know I had U.S. address for my credit card while in Shanghai.

Let me know more about what you are doing. Once you do buy a book it shows up in the Manage Your Kindle link at the top of the page. You have a choice there to download it to your Kindle (which you cannot do) or download it to your computer. Chose the computer download. Once you hook up your Kindle to your computer you will see it there in the Kindle file.

Sorry if I cannot be more definite for you. I am in Oregon now and no longer in Shanghai.

Manar,
when you clicked on "buy this item" - what were you buying?

A Kindle ? There's no background for you that I could find in this thread.
First, you need a U.S. credit card with a U.S. address to buy a Kindle and also,
usually, for ebooks, UNLESS you use a gift certificate to buy ebooks.

I'm not sure where to start.

Steven, if you have only one Kindle, does it actually have to be attached
to your computer when downloading Amazon Kindle books you've bought?
Can you download it to the computer and transfer it via USB afterward if
you feel like it?

If you need the Kindle attached, it's probably easiest to go into the
Documents folder before beginning the download ?

Steven thank you but i think the problem is with the actual buying of the book not the delivering

Andrys Sorry i meant the Ebook i got my kindle with my visa and although i live overseas i have an address that i have it delivered to usually

so if i bought my kindle with a regular visa why cant i buy the ebooks the same way !!

Manar,
They use the address on the current credit card you have listed with them.

If your credit card is validated with the address where you actually are for now, it won't work.

What people do is buy gift certificates. From what I read there, these have no international restrictions. Then you change your payment method to gift certificates that you've bought.

However, if you can change the official address on your U.S. credit card for yourself to a U.S. address (family?) that is crucial. It works because instead of using your credit card to buy ebooks (which have restrictions that normal books don't have), you'd be using gift certificates and your credit card would not have to be validated which uses your current credit card address.

Manar, i hope it does work well. I read the other day that's how others do it, so let us know if it does!

I'm gonna try to get a gift certificate cause changing my credit card address is not an option

I meant that when you're changing your setup at Amazon -- *After* you buy your gift certificates, then reset your main info, this time saying that your residence is whatever one you used to receive your Kindle. I think they check your address as listed with Amazon when you get the books (but would not be checking your credit card as it would not be used for the books themselves directly).

Your card wouldn't be tested. It's a hassle of course.

Good luck!

PS (While saying all this, I'm assuming the U.S. address is a family one and that you're there during the year, etc.)
