Kindle Your Social Life --- We're Making Reading Cool Again

In the middle of reading last night - my Kindle just froze. I had almost full battery power and was reading a book I bought from Amazon.

I turned the Kindle off. The screen stayed on! I left it for a couple of minutes thinking that the charge would die, but it didn't. I tried pressing and holding buttons, turning things on and off again.

I finally disconnected the battery and just let it sit for another 2-3 minutes, the screen finally faded and looked 'off'.

After I reinserted the battery and turned it on, it took a looong time to turn on. I went back to the book I'd been reading, I had to choose it from the menu, and it opened to where I'd started reading an hour before. Bummer!

I found my place, turned the Kindle off/on again. Everything is working normally with no more problems, yet.

Anyone else have this problem or know what causes it?

how do you remove the battery on the kindle 2?

I have had the same problem. Mine is a Kindle 2. Sometimes I've had to wait overnight for the system to do anything.

I've noticed that this happens more often after I have been reading for a couple of hours. Maybe the Kindle needs a break - a potty stop, same as me. Or else, I'm just pressing the buttons too fast (bookmark or notes).

Another thing, sometimes when this happens the Kindle goes through this update process (you know with the bar running across the screen). The problem with this is that any bookmarks or notes that I have are no longer there. They do appear in the "My Clippings", but how do I get them back into the book? In a couple of cases I have resorted to re-reading the book in order to add the notes, etc. Defeats the purpose/function of the Kindle. Any suggestions?

Hi, folks -
You should use the RESET or RESTART function, which is detailed in the user's guide.

Slide the power button to the right and hold it for 15-20 seconds. Then release it and go away for a few minutes.

When you're back it should have started getting itself back together again. This is 99% effective.

To make sure you keep notes you are working on, every once in a while, press HOME button, which closes your book and makes a record of your notes and highlighting in that session.

If for some reason you have a freeze, the book can't be closed properly and all your changes are lost.

I regularly do HOME and make sure any bunch of notes are recorded and then click on the title again to get right back to where I was.

If you don't know, there is a bonus feature not much talked about by Amazon.
If you have enabled backups of your annotations (Menu/settings), then all your annotations will show up for each book at http://kindle.amazon.com

If you made a lot of those, go to the bottom of that webpage when on a book's list of annotations and click on the option to show all notes on one (scrolling) page.

The Kindle 2 shouldn't be freezing much though, unless you had some complex web browsing sessions or you are on a an e-book with a problem with formatting or something. Also, too many quickly pushed buttons confuse any of the Kindles and it just stops. So be patient. Images take awhile to load, for one thing.

The battery in the Kindle 2 is not user-serviceable. If it has a prob it goes back to Amazon for replacement. So far, I haven't readd of that being needed except for possible defective batteries which show problems in the first week...
