BROKEN ENGAGEMENT

A young man loved a young lady who came from a poor family and they both started courtship. Along the line, the young man got interested in another lady from a rich family and sought for her hand in marriage also. Even though he did not love the second lady as much as he loved the first one, he broke the courtship with the first lady who came from a poor family.  What are the other reasons why a partner could abandon the person he loves and go for the one he did not love as much?  Note that as some men do this so likewise do women.
