It was certain to happen, but not this soon I had hopped. I dropped my Kindle on our wood floors and sure enough, the top right hand corner of the screen is lights out. I have lots of plastic devices (phones, ipods, etc) and I have never broken one that I can recall. The Kindle is inherently a somewhat fragile device given the "glass" screen and its slippery body.
Of course I am self insured (or this wouldn't happen) and looks like Amazon wants $200 for a replacement. It is a lot but seems fair since they are replacing it with a new device and that is probably near their cost anyway. Turns out that this is a real hidden cost of such a device, and yes delicate, like the Kindle. If the price were closer to a $100 or so it wouldn't be so painful.
Lots of new stuff in the pipeline so I did think to wait and hold out for something better - perhaps a different color!!. But another odd and somewhat unsettling feeling has set in; I really don't want to read anything that isn't on my Kindle. Hmmm.
