Kindle Your Social Life --- We're Making Reading Cool Again

I released this book about 18 months ago almost by accident. I gave a workshop for our local writers club on the Kindle (I was then only one at the time who owned one) and I put together about a dozen pages for handouts. The more I wrote, the more I realized that this could be a handy little "how to" book.

So I added another 20 pages and actually uploaded it to the kindle DTP at the workshop. When we met again two weeks later, it was on Amazon's website and for sale. ($2.49) The club members were amazed.

I just broke the 1,000 copy sales mark this week with a majority of those sales coming in the last six months. That's amazing to me when I think that I haven't done any promotion on it at all. ZIP! Though I'm getting ready too. I have several other books in Kindle format but none of them has done as well as this one. This book is hardly ever over the top 5 spot in the 'technical writing' category and is #1 as often as not. Which probably means there isn't a lot of competition in this category :-) A sale a day (maybe 10 a week) will keep it there.

I'm really interested in getting some promotion started. I'm also getting ready to put three books on SmashWord in order to take advantage of the other e-book readers...

Have any of you worked with them?

I just noticed that in the three categories that my 'How Too' book, "Publish Anything On Amazon's Kindle" is in, it's ranked at 1, 2 and 3. That's pretty good considering it was released over 18 months ago. Actually, it's never been higher than 9 in the Technical Writing category. It's overall ranking in the Kindle e-book store (all Kindle books) averages between 7 and 12 thousand. Still pretty good considering there are at least 300,000 e-books available and maybe more.

My feeble attempts at promotion seems to be paying off. My website hits are up 78% since Christmas and the newest book, "FREE Internet" is getting some sales. I started an article writing campaign on Jan 1st, 2010. I've released 13 articles now on five different article submission sites. One is in the UK and hasn't approved any articles as yet.

The best submission site by far is Ezine. It's one of the oldest and most popular of the article distribution sites. The key is to have good articles. Most of mine are between 600 and 700 words. I write on a variety of subjects but the "how to" articles get the most views. I've had over 700 views on the articles so far and they really help to bring traffic to my website.

If you type "Randy Benjamin" into Google or any of the major search engines, you find that I'm on the first page, # 1 spot. You'll also find that my articles occupy 15 to 20 places over the first three or four pages. These are the articles I'm releasing through the submission sites. Google indexes these articles in just a few days. Other search engines (Yahoo, Bing, Lycos, Altivista, etc.) always list more sites than Google. I think Google is more selective.

Each article might be picked up by dozens of newsgroups, websites, news forums, etc., but Google only lists the site that it first found the article. Many of the other search engines list all the sites that have picked up the article. In those cases, I might have almost all of the listing for the first 4 or 5 pages returned on a, "Randy Benjamin" search.

This has really helped sales and website visits. I'd recommend article writing if you are trying to drive traffic to your website. It works. Next, I'm going to make a couple of YouTube videos promoting my website. I have several on YouTube now, but they promote something different. Lots of new ideas to try...

If you're having success with a special promotion, please let the other authors here on the forum know what's working. And don't forget, what's NOT working is just as important!
