Can you use the Kindle on an airplane or is it prohibited like a cell phone?

Last weekend I took my Kindle on an airplane. I turned off the wireless and read my book and listened to the music I had on it whenever we have the right to use electronic devices.

No steward ever asked what I was using and no steward ever told me to turn off my Kindle.

Just turn off the Whispernet (wireless feature).

You can use your Kindle as long as you turn off the wireless. Even the new cellphones have an "airplane mode" which turns off the wireless allowing you to play games or videos. It is an electronic device so you will have to wait until the proper time to use it.

Thanks to all. Great advise (and news).

You technically have to turn it off for take offs and landing. Most staff now recognize it sadly. I got away with it until Oprah

Gypsy - I had the same issue until I got one of the leather M-Edge covers (bright green). Now I can read my Kindle right through takeoff and landing, and no one says a thing. I think it just looks like a planner to them, so they don't even notice it. Give it a try!

There is a SAFETY reason for turning off electronics during takeoff and landings. It's not to irritate the passengers. It's irresponsible to try and "get away" with leaving electronics on during takeoff and landing. Read the following article.

Technically the Kindle 2 doesn't turn off, so I'm not sure if it's still technically allowed on planes. I emailed Amazon customer service to see what they have to say. I'll update when I hear back from them.

Really? Even when Wnet is switched to off and the device is powered completely off (not just in sleep mode)? Just curious. Thanks for taking the initiative with CS and updating back.

Hi CJ! The Kindle does turn off, you just have to hold the switch for a couple of seconds when you push it to the right (just like when you push to put to sleep or wake up, but longer). That will turn it off entirely.
