Kindle Your Social Life --- We're Making Reading Cool Again

Hi All,

I was doing some research about kindle. Like what kind of formats do Kindle support and can we make the content/ document to Kindle format. After googling many times I ended up with partial answers to some of my questions and some can't be answered myself. Can any one please share your experiences and ideas with me. It's very helpful for me.

I am searching for publishing pdf's into my blog and can one read the pdf's inside the blog? I have seen in the preview of my blog they even don't make the links clickable is that the same on kindle as well?

I tried to publilsh one of my book on kindle store. It was always showing me errors while uploading files. I am from European country, so I thought they allow only USA authors. Is there an automatic process like programatically upload documents to Kindle store?

We are a publishing company, can we create a separate Kindle store and publish our documents to Kindle store, if there is only one kindle store available.

Is there any open API for Kindle books uploading?

Any ideas please help me.

Thanks in advance,
Aruna

HI, I might have answers to some of your questions...
The kindle 1 &2 can read these formats: MOBI, AZW (native format), txt, PRC ( I think it will also read the RTF format, but I can't swear to that)
The large format Kindle (K3?) can also read the PDF format, as well as the others.

I haven't done any publishing, but I have done file conversions using MOBI pocket creator and Stanza.

Beyond that, I don't know the answers to your other questions. I'm sure there are people here ( authors, etc.) who have published in the Kindle format that may be able to help you out!

Hi Mary,

Thanks alot for your reply. I am just wondering if we can read the pdf inside blog with kindle. Actually, I am looking to do this conversion programatically. Hope that anyone else can help me here.

a few quick answers:

1) you have to be in the us to publish and sell a book. as far as my experience.
2) there is only one kindle store. get in touch with kindle customer service for further clarification. there is no separate publisher store feature yet.
3) no open API.
4) you cannot embed a pdf into a blog and have kindle owners readthe pdf. Not sure how its handled and whether a link shows up or not.

Aruna,

One other item that might be of interest to you is the free tool Calibre. I use it to convert books in virtually an e-format to mobi (which can be read by the Kindle). The link to the tool is : http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/.

I write in Word. Then when the mood strikes me I open a copy of Homesite (a simple html editor) I have from an ancient era. I do a "select all" and then "copy" in Word, open an empty page in Homesite, and paste the words into that empty html file.

Then inside of Homesite I do minimal formatting. My book has no pictures (yet). So I am just using the

tag to break up the words into bite size chunks. When that is done I go to dtp.amazon.com and upload my html file. The final step is using the Kindle previewer to "see" what my chapter looks like. I go back and forth between Homesite and the dtp previewer until I like what I see. That is the extent of my formatting. Your mileage may vary.
