Kindle Your Social Life --- We're Making Reading Cool Again

Thanks to Joe Konrath for mentioning me. My name is Boyd Morrison, and I wrote the thriller novels The Ark, The Palmyra Impact, and The Adamas Blueprint. I am trying to break into the publishing business, and I've made great progress so far with a literary agent and blurbs from NY Times bestselling authors. While I'm writing my next book, I decided to offer my books for the Kindle so that people can start reading my work.

I priced my books at $0.99 for my first novel, The Adamas Blueprint, and $1.99 (currently marked down to $1.59) for my second and third novels. My books are also available for download on my web site at www.boydmorrison.com, so that people without a Kindle or iPhone can also read my novels.

I would call my thrillers action/adventures or technothrillers, and the authors that inspire me are Clive Cussler, James Rollins, Doug Preston, Lincoln Child, Michael Crichton, and Dean Koontz. I am always trying to improve my writing, so I welcome any feedback you would care to give me at boyd@boydmorrison.com.

Here is a short synopsis for each book:

The Ark - A relic from Noah’s Ark gives a religious fanatic and his followers a weapon that will let them recreate the effects of the biblical flood, and former combat engineer Tyler Locke has just seven days to find the Ark and the secret hidden inside before it’s used to wipe out civilization again.

The Palmyra Impact - When a massive explosion rocks the uninhabited central Pacific and launches a series of mega-tsunamis toward Hawaii, the clock begins. In one hour, Honolulu will cease to exist. In that same instant, Kai Tanaka, the director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning System, begins a desperate race to save the lives of a million people, including his wife and daughter.

The Adamas Blueprint - One of the greatest inventions of the 20th century becomes a death sentence for grad student Kevin Hamilton when forces beyond his comprehension set their sights on the billion-dollar chemical process he unwittingly created.

Thanks,
Boyd Morrison

Since I first put my novels on the Kindle on March 13, I've sold over 2,800 copies of all three books together. I don't know how this compares with other indie authors, but I'm very pleased with the results given that I'm an unknown author with no marketing budget.

I'd say there are a few things that have helped my sales. First, I paid a graphic designer to developer professional-looking covers for my books. They say don't judge a book by its cover, but some people still do. Second, I priced the books inexpensively so that readers would be encouraged to take a chance on an unknown author. Third, it doesn't hurt that I have wonderful blurbs for my books from bestselling authors. Fourth, the Amazon listings have enough description of my books to give readers an idea of what to expect. I know I won't go further with an author I've never heard of if the description is too sketchy to tell me about the novel. Fifth, I have a web site that lets people find out more about me and my books. And finally, word-of-mouth has been strong so far, which I'm very grateful for.

Do you think that pricing your books for less is helping sales? It's an intriguing idea.

Yes, I certainly wouldn't have gotten the response I have if I had priced the books at $5.99, which is typical for paperback novels also available on the Kindle. The way I look at it, instead of spending my promotional budget on advertising, I simply lower the price of my novels. A lower price is my advertisement.

I've now sold over 7,000 copies.

Great news re the 7000 sales. I think the more you sell, the more likely you will be to show up higher in the list of Amazon's search engines.

Congratulations, and I hope the sales and success continue.

By what magic were you able to get the blurbs from the bestselling authors? How did you get your books in front of them?

Reply to This

Thanks! No magic involved. I went to writers conferences and met all of the authors who gave me blurbs. I got to know them, and they graciously agreed to read my books and offered blurbs for them.

Wonderful! You've impressed some wonderful writers. Preston, for example, is a "must buy" favorite of mine. I've downloaded samples of your books and will follow up with purchase on Kindle.

You're an inspiration to we laborers in the writing vineyard. Best wishes for continued success.

By the way, no one who hasn't labored for hours, days and months on a book--with all those many times of failure of confidence in the middle of the night--can understand how tough it is to write and publish a novel.

The writing, I find, is the easiest part. Dealing with the internal dialogue ("It's great." "It stinks." "It's not right." etc.) is the real work.

I hope you have supportive people around you who encourage you. If you do, I envy you. If not, sign me up as an encourager.

I agree about the internal dialogue. It's every writer's worst enemy.

My wife has been very supportive about this whole process, as have my friends and family. It's great having them cheer me on. Thanks for your encouragement as well!

Just finished reading the sample of The Palmyra Impact and must report I was compelled to click on the "buy now" button. A gripping read, a slam-bang start, and characters I already feel I know.

Way to go! Though this is an early report as I haven't finished the book, what I've seen so far is the equal the best of the bestsellers I read (about 40 or more a year).

Tech question: How do you format your upload so you get the indents for each graph? I've uploaded using MS Word and the indents won't keep.

Hope you don't mind the interim note but, being one myself, I believe all writers need a word of encouragement every so often. Hourly would work for me!
