I had fun writing the romance novel set during the fur trapping period of the opening of the American continent. The heroine is a fictional 'woman's libber' who is a competent woods woman. She finds out that her new boyfriend is anything but 'Skookum'. (Look THAT one up in your Wikipedia!).
I myself remember the Indians spear fishing in the great river - before hydroelectric power abolished a way of life.
