I am one of those Kindle2 owners whose opinion is that the Kindle2 screen is too dark.
The display screen is too dark (as compared to Kindle1) AND the type font used is too faint, making the Kindle2 display harder & less comfortable to read.
You need REALLY strong lighting to get a good view on 2, but who wants airport runway lights in their bedroom!
The 2 display is good outdoors in bright sunlight - but sucks indoors using normal lighting.
The Font *smoothing* used may be what is making the font too "feathered" or faint to be clear.
Put my Kindle1 and Kindle2 side-by-side and it is hard to miss the fact that the Kindle2 display screen is NOT as good quality as it could be.
What irks me most is that Amazon COULD correct this with a Firmware correction to the FONT used in Kindle2 - but will not do that.
