The Uncle John/Esteban Switch
The most beautiful sound in the world to most people is the sound of their name. My son, Esteban gets such a kick out of my substituting his name for "Uncle John" in this rhyme. Check him out:

Grand Old Duke of York
You can really kindle an interest in words with your children with fun fingerplays. Old favorites like "I'm a Little Teapot" are side by side with unusual rhymes, like "Jelly on the Plate."
The Grand Old Duke of York is probably in the middle of the group. Kids love it. See:

This is a longish fingerplay that spellbinds the children until the very end. They happily participate, counting and acting in the process.
