Hi CJ! The Kindle does turn off, you just have to hold the switch for a couple of seconds when you push it to the right (just like when you push to put to sleep or wake up, but longer). That will turn it off entirely.

Gypsy - I had the same issue until I got one of the leather M-Edge covers (bright green). Now I can read my Kindle right through takeoff and landing, and no one says a thing. I think it just looks like a planner to them, so they don't even notice it…
