Jon Spoelstra What to read when you get old

At my age, I read for fun. Don't talk to me about books that will make me smarter. I was already as smart as I'll ever be a few decades ago. And, reading retirement financial books is the best way to nod off quickly.

Give me a good mystery book. For me, I prefer a different era like the Nate Heller books by Max Allan Collins or James Ellroy books.

I don't give any book a big chance. If it isn't interesting from the get-go, I let go. Sure I paid for the book, but I don't ha

Robert Williams On Graymalkin

About six or seven years ago, when I was still creating writing credits to add to my resumé, I was enjoying the relative success of a short story I had written called "The Experiment," a story of everyday torture based on real events, and I was at a sort of crossroads as I decided what I would write

rhondajoyce Common Threads

Hello everyone,
Common threads is a book of ten true life short stories about women who have triumphed over tribulation of all sorts. This is just the sort of book I can actually read lately because of all the time constraints in my life. Short stories of hope, inspiration and courage. Verrry good!! There are quotes at the beginning of each chapter and these are nice too. Love the quotes. You should pick this one up my reading friends. Rhondajoyce

Rune Rindel Hansen We the Living by Ayn Rand

Book review. Rating 8 out of 10.

This is a fine book which goes on in Petrograd, in the early days of the communist state. It describes the hardship of former bourgeosie returning to live in Russia after the revolution. Ayn somewhat indirectly portays human characters greater than the common mold and describes the difficulty they find to succumb to communist ideology, which doesn't favor the existence of strong outstanding individuals. The weakness of the novel is the plot, more precise

Rune Rindel Hansen The social network business plan : 18 strategies that will create great wealth by David A. Silver

Book Review. Rating 8 out of 10

This is a quite interesting book, about the future and business perspectives of the social media revolution which we are witnessing. The very big concept which Silver is prophesizing, is that in a very short time, 2011, we will see a massive rise of a type social networks which Silver terms as "Recommender Social Networks". This is a social network where consumers share information about goods, in the form a Rating, Reviewing and Recommending. According

Rune Rindel Hansen The Yellow Dog by Georges Simenon

Book Review. Rating 4 out of 10

Now this book, being from 1931, must belong somewhat to the adolescence of the detective novel genre. It's actually an ok read. The setting for this crime story is rural France, that is the fishing town Concarneau on the Bretagne coast. The dick of Georges Simenons books is called Maigret and he is actually quite cool. He is a strong self-willed character, who refuse to take any crap from his surroundings, and seems alive and kicking even today. Embedded

Rune Rindel Hansen Beloved by Toni Morrison

Book Review Rating 2 out of 10 I must admit I was a little bored with this book. Of course it properly has some litteray qualities, which the litteraty people dig, but my god, some of the books these people like, especially the contemporary ones, I just sometimes find absolutely and utterly endless boring! Well apparently Beloved is a ghost. The setting is some black guys who are slaves in the middle of the 19th. century. What I also found boring about this book is that these black guys don't re… Continue

Rune Rindel Hansen Twitter! - massekommunikation på 140 tegn by @nfsaxberg and @webjay

Book Review Rating 8 out of 10 This book is so far only in Danish. It's a great little book about Twitter. I like the production story about the book. The 25.th of March 2009 the Editor of the printing company woke up and got the idea to the book. Immediately he contacted the authors and they started to produce the book right away. The great message of the book is that the social media revolution has changed our world, the target group for the book is mainly companies and business people and i… Continue

Rune Rindel Hansen Nostromo by Joseph Conrad

Book Review Rating 3 out of 10 This book is about South America around 1900. What is happening is that the area is being developed by foreign investments from Europe and North America. So we see the rise of mining, they want to build railway and the telegraph is drawing it's lines. The central character of the account is Nostromo, he is some kind of Che Guevara or Prince Myshkin like character, but eventually he is corrupted by the greed for wealth like everybody else. The best thing about the… Continue

steven nedelton A REVIEW OF CROSSROADS BY JOE PARENTE

“An exciting new book is out, Crossroads by Steven Nedelton. I recommend it highly, in fact I bought it. It is a mind bending thriller that deals with espionage, murder, revenge and mayhem. If you have ever ridden on a roller coaster, you had better keep your hands in the car with this one. This will keep you on the edge of your seat but at times there is NO edge. Mind control takes over leaving you grasping and gasping at this Ian Holm style story. It is, however, much more than that. You won't… Continue

Sam Jankis should romance reading be encouraged?

Some say that romance novels are a bit too raunchy for the young teen reader. I personally believe they are suited for an adult audience, but romance novels usually have their established limits. The young teen novel, Are you there god, it's me margaret, was actually more raunchy than some romance novels. So i believe it is debatable. what do you think? Continue

Rune Rindel Hansen Another World by Pat Barker

Book review Rating 2 out of 10 This is a funny book, not that it is funny though! But reading it I was wondering - What kind of book is this? There is a ghost in it, so I thought maybe it is ghost story? But not really. Then there is also a story about a boy, Gareth, who is jealous upon the smaller boy in the family, Jasper, which is the shared child of his mothers new husband, Gareth's own father has broken the connection. So Gareth feels left out of the family and exerts pretty serious violen… Continue

Rune Rindel Hansen The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi

This is a great book. It tells the story about the bi-sexual Karim who is the son of an immigrant Indian man and British mother in the UK. That being said Hanif Kureishi is not a new Kafka, Proust, Joyce or Blixen. The genre of the book must be described as daring mainstream. But I dare say this is as good as mainstream can get. Like the clever dicks have said about Shakespeare: There is something for both the peasant and the king. The book describes life in the 70's and 80's London. Seen from t… Continue

Rune Rindel Hansen That Yew Tree's Shade by Cyril Hare

Well I finnished "That Yew Tree's Shade" by Cyril Hare (US title: Death Walks the Woods) Apparently this author is one of the classics in the crime/mystery genre. The novel is centered about the investigator Francis Pettigrew. Well I must admit that I was not too caught by this book. To me it's greatest charm was the naïvity and innoscence of it's setting in rural England in the first part of the 20th. century. Things we would normally expect from a crime/mystery book like suspence, thrill, fear… Continue

Rune Rindel Hansen The Mandarins by Simon de Beauvoir

I have read a part of The Mandarins by Simone de Beauvoir. The version I am reading is in 3 parts, and I read the first part which has the subtitle: Anne. The Mandarins is a roman-à-clef which describes the intellectual left-wing millieu in post WW2 Paris. The central character of the account is "Henri" which is considered to be Albert Camus. It's interesting to see the left-wing movement at this place and time. All the people in the millieu continously suffer bad conscience because many of thei… Continue
