"Free" Frommer's CitySet Barcelona Guide

The venerable travel guide company Frommer's made Kindle news earlier this month when they announced that they were releasing 12 of their best-selling City Guides (about $200 and 8 1/2 pounds of paper worth) as a $50 Kindle edition.

Since the size of the free book samples Kindle offers are based on how big the entire book is, it stood to reason that the sample for Frommer's CitySet would be sizable, and it is. In fact, it begins with a nice overview of the entire set followed by… Continue

I can see the light!

You know I really love the e-ink on the Kindle, but depending on the lighting, sometimes it is a little hard to read. I just bought the Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 and it is awesome. It not only is good for my Kindle, but it also is great for just reading a regular book. I checked out a couple of other lights and this one seemed to have the best reviews. The size of the clip is pretty big, but is easy to clamp onto things.

The Text-to-Speech Feature

Last night I was reading (okay, so what's new?), I also happened to be listening to live music at my favorite coffeehouse, Rockhopper's. I Was just getting started on book 4 of the Twilight series, and it was closing time. Darn. So I drove away, regretting that I couldn't be reading while I drove. Ah! Text-To-Speech! This would be a great opportunity to try it out for more than the short 30 second or so demos, I've done in the past. I… Continue

Celebrity Kindlers Spotted!

I've really enjoyed watching more famous people show up here and there with their Kindles. Last year there was a paparazzi shot of Jennifer Aniston holding a K1 while sunbathing, and last week Jimmy Fallon talked up the K2 on Sirius Radio's "The Howard Stern Show" and cracked the place up when he used the device's text-to-speech function to read a passage from Stern co-host Artie Lange's autobiography "Too Fat to Fish."

Then yesterday, on Twitter of all places, Stephen Fry and Demi… Continue

new skin new cover

I just bought a Kindle from some very nice person on this board for my son's birthday and when it arrived it had a beautiful butterfly skin on it and a butterfly cover from strangedog.com. I already had a skin and cover from strangedog for myself but decided to trade my son because he would not go for the butterflies and I didn't want to take it off! So now I have a kindle with butterflies. See pictures. I already had a butterfly cover so now I have two! I sold 3 of my covers, so now I am down… Continue

Handy File Conversions for your Kindle

I've been reading a lot on the forums about converting files for the Kindle. I have tried this a few times, and have had some success, so I thought I pass on to you what I've learned.

There are a number of programs available to convert files to a format your Kindle can read.

First Question: What formats can my Kindle read?

.azw

.mobi

.prc

.txt

Next Question: What software can I use? Will it cost me an arm & a leg?

The software… Continue

Browsing Evolved...

I will always love book stores, this will never change. I love the atmosphere, the big comfy chairs, the smell of coffee from the cafe. As long as they exist, I will walk the isles and pull from the shelves, the ones that intrigue me. I will thumb through the pages and read the descriptions. I can be grabbed by design as easily as title or author and know almost intuitively if it might be something I would like.

Since getting my Kindle, a few key things have changed. I no… Continue

Will Work for Candy :)

I have been working with the designer of the Borsa Bella bags as she tries to perfect her bags for Kindle owners. Since she does not own one, we have worked out an exchange for my testing them and photographing them for her (I am a professional photographer). She has done a couple of sleeves for those who do not want a cover. These have extra padding and either a side zip or you can request a top zip. That was my… Continue
