Kindle Your Social Life --- We're Making Reading Cool Again

INITIATION: Switching to the Kindle

Gradually, I find that I no longer desire paper-made books.

I prefer to read on my KINDLE.

But trust me, it's been gradual.

I'm also noticing that the level of "entertainment quality" of the books one initially reads
decides how quickly and to what degree Kindle owners become "into" their Kindles.

I’ve had a Kindle for 6 months and the problem for me was finding outstanding books to get me
used to reading this way.

Two of my close friends, however, got "into" their Kindles right away--and they also admit
that a big reason for that was how much they enjoyed the first books they read on the Kindle.

I wasn't as lucky breaking myself into the Kindle.

I found two books, the autobiography of Osama Bin Laden’s mistress, Kola Boof (what A book!) and Roberto Bolano’s “2666″ about the unsolved mystery of the mass murdering of young girls in a small Mexican town and both blew me away.

So when you have really strong material to read, the Kindle is a great device that makes you forget you’re reading a machine.

I actually snuggled up in bed with the Kindle when I was reading “2666″ and “Diary of a Lost Girl” (Bin Laden's mistress/sex slave) because they were so good, and once I actually found myself ENGROSSED in something I was reading on the device, I notice that I started purchasing a lot more books because there’s a huge discount on the Kindle Store books and also you start to feel funny if you don’t read something on this device for a long time. It compels you to use it.

Agreed, the quality of the reading material makes a huge difference. It's just like with printed books, if they are not good or boring, I just don't pick them up. The trick with Kindle is to remember that the Kindle itself is "not" boring or just bad, but that the reading material is.
I downloaded a couple of books that are abominably boring and trite. I really wish I'd saved my money and time. I think I got just a little bit into them before I put the Kindle down for a few days. Fortunately I got into it again when I downloaded "Metzger's Dog" by Thomas Perry.. It was a hoot, I could not put it down. Got another book going. It's interesting and compelling although a bit dark and depressing. Typical of SF/Sword Sorcery genre....

Hi Sosnowsk, I got "2666" from a Women's Violence group in San Diego. They gave them out in Mobi electronic and put on my Kindle for me. I had no idea that it's not in the Kindle Store or I wouldn't have recommended it. But it's an excellent and fascinating read. I also noticed that the other book "Diary" is not listed with the original Hardcover as being available in Kindle. You have to search the actual Kindle store to get the digital version, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Where did you find an electronic version of 2666? Amazon doesn't seem to have it "Kindle-ized" yet and I can't bring myself to buy a paper copy! I haven't read a single paper book since I got my Kindle about a year ago but I've read more this year than ever before thanks to the Kindle!

Yes, unfortunately I'm finding myself reading and getting more $-material than I did BK, even though I'm aware of the free options...
There's something enticing about the ease of reading the Kindle - I just am more engrossed in the content rather than the feel, look or weight of a book or being unable to find where I last left said book :-)
