memory sparked by New Yorker article

The New Yorker has an interesting story about the advent of children’s libraries, children’s lit criticism, literary infighting, and more. Part of the article reminded me of being nine, when I was in fourth grade, living for a year with my grandparents. The Summit County library was across the street from the house, and I had my own card. That was the year I read “A Little Princess” and “A Tree Grow… Continue

Hi:

When you get a minute, please check out my three Kindle books at Amazon. Just use my name to search, and they will pop up. Or, if you prefer to search by title, they are:

1. Assignment in Antibua
2. Julius Caesar
3. Spymaster

Many thanks.

I wonder what the big changes will be on the new models. I wonder if there will be any kind of upgrade for version 1.0? I like it, but if there are major improvements or innovations, I'd like a swing at them.

Figured it out. There's a floating "save" button I hadn't seen before.

I have gotten to the browse stage, but there is never an "upload" button, just a "finished" button and nothing happens. I'll try again. Thanks for the response, abhi.

hi sonya - you can click on the 'my settings' link on the top right - it's in the white box along with the Hello sonya! message and inbox and friends link.
on that page which should have a url something like - http://amazonkindle.ning.com/profiles/settings/editProfileInfo
you'll have to wait around half a minute for Profile Photo to show up with your current pofile picture.
to the right of it is a little image icon - click on that to get a box that lets you browse through your computer for a picture.

Just downloaded The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I cannot resist reading it for myself after glossing over its reviews. I don't read full reviews before I read books, but I've caught enough buzzwords like "brilliant" in my peripheral vision to be snared in. I certainly don't want to miss out, and should I run into the author at the grocery store, I'd like to be able to say congratulations on your freakish success.

I finished "Night Prey" today, the sixth in the Sanford "Prey" series. The main character, Lucas Davenport, gets sadder with each episode, and of course I'm left with a sense of dread and of anticipation to see what will happen to him next. It's nice to come in on a series after more than a dozen of them have been written. It's kind of like viewing five season of "Six Feet Under" in a six week binge.

yeah - i know what you mean about the textbooks. If they can get some sort of journaling software in and a writable screen (which actually the company that makes the Kindle eInk screen has already made) - wow. that'd be your whole backpack in one kindle.

I'm currently reading the sixth book in the John Sanford Prey series on Kindle. (Can we just call it "K" ?) I think I've read about ten books on the device since May, and love its ease and portability. I was in the car yesterday trying to browse my gmail account, and that wasn't as satisfying, but for book reading, I couldn't be happier. The side buttons don't bother me. Accidentally change the page? Change it back in a flash. It's like losing your place in a physical book. Nothing to fret about. I've also spent some time converting html files (like an Alice Munro short story on the newyorker.com) into a text file and emailing it my K email address and reading the short story on the run. I look forward to publishers using this technology to bring old books back to life, and for a wider audience (with an inevitable upgrade in convenience and a downgrade in price) to discover uses. Can you imagine being able to download textbooks and not have to haul them around? I wish I'd had that chance in ye days of old. I love the K.
